Q: Why shouldn't I throw my computer in the trash? A: Computers, especially the monitors(cathode ray tubes - CRT's) contain toxic chemicals that leach through the ground and enter the ground water table contaminating the water. Each CRT contains between 2 and 3 pounds of lead. The computers contain solder and other chemicals that can contaminate the ground water. This is why the State of Wisconsin has defined computer equipment as Hazardous Waste.
Q: Why should I recycle my computer? A: Besides adherring to state laws, recycling saves the raw materials that can be reused instead of mining new materials out of the ground. It is good for the enviroment because we are putting less material into the landfills.
Q: Why does it cost to recycle? A: The monitors have lead in them. The lead needs to be reclaimed before the glass is processed for reuse. All metal and wiring is removed from the tube, the metal band around the tube is cut off and recycled, the back of the tube that contains the lead coating is smashed and sorted into a container and the thick front lens is sorted into another container for recycling. The leaded glass then goes through a process to recover the lead before the glass can be reused. This process is very expensive.
Q: Why we don't charge for Pc's and other Computer equipment. A: PC's, scanners, small printers, networking equipment, hard drives and other computer equipment are quit easy to demanufacturer and most if not all of the materials have some scrap value. The money recieved from recycling these materials pays for the time to demanufacturer these items.
Q: What happens to all the scrap material? A: Monitors and Terminals are packed up on skids and in gaylords and shipped to a company that demanufacteres them and recycles the glass after recovering the lead. The materials that are recovered from the PC's and other electronic materials are sorted by type and then sold to scrap yards. Some equipment is sold to international buyers. A portion of the usuable components are resold on E-Bay and on this web page. Some material is sold to computer builders. Ink Jet cartridges are sold to a reconditioning company.
Q: What about TV's? A: Tv's have little to no scrap value. However, we do have a company that recycles them for a fee.
